Experience of the stay
Experiences during the trip
Day 1: Osaka - Shirahama - Susami
◎ 9:00 Departure - 12:00 Shirasen
It’s a one-night, two-day trip to Wakayama with my partner from Osaka. At "Shirasen," located on the second floor of a seafood market, the high-sense interior features a gray theme, offering a single seafood bowl of the day’s recommendation and Shirasen ice cream. The fresh and delicious seafood, without any hint of odor or sinews, is divine, and paired with the flavorful soup, it quickly disappears. It’s strange how there’s no line, but I hope it stays that way and doesn’t get crowded. It’s such a lovely place that makes me want to visit again.
On the first floor, at the "Shirahama Fish Shop," we select sashimi that includes freshly caught sweet shrimp from the tank, and off we go with smiles.
◎ 14:00 Roadside Station Susami - Hotel
Big roadside stations are really fun. Arriving right nearby at the accommodation "Fairfield by Marriott Wakayama Kumano Kodo Susami," as mentioned above, the quiet and relaxing room features large windows that open up to an emerald blue sea, offering a healing, elegant time.
◎ 16:30 BUSH de coffee
Driving for just under 10 minutes from the hotel, there's a café with a view of "Lovers’ Cape and Couple Waves." I came thinking it’s a place for Instagram photos. We are picky about stone oven pizzas. Wow, what a ridiculously delicious Margherita! The extraordinary location, with Couple Waves right in front of us, makes it a perfect Margherita. In a stylish interior without waiting, we overlook the Pacific Ocean while indulging in the luxury of just being. Watching the sun set as we leave in time for closing, I thank the earth for the beauty of the sunset from our room’s window back at the hotel.
◎ 19:00 Onsen
A spacious and clean changing room. The open-air bath overlooking the ocean is not only liberating and amazing but also makes your skin feel silky smooth. It seems like all the travel fatigue, along with everyday worries, melts away, leaving a profoundly comforting and healing feeling.
◎ 20:00 Room Drinks - Sleep
Cheers with cold beer. Enjoying sashimi prepared at the Shirahama Fish Shop while drinking sake. The soy sauce they specially gave us is incredibly delicious. It’s called "Umai Soy Sauce," and I loved it so much I bought some at the supermarket too. Drunkenly hopping into lively conversations. Since it’s a special occasion, I take another dip in the bath while stargazing, then say goodnight in the fluffy bed.
Day 2: Just relaxing and detouring on the way back
◎ 8:00 Wake Up - Check Out
Last time, I went to see the sunrise, but I’ll skip it this time as the sunrise time has moved earlier and the location is likely different. I enjoy a good, long sleep in the comfortable bedding. Waking up refreshingly with a morning bath, I prepare to depart.
◎ 11:00 Lunch at "BUSH de coffee"
Originally, I had planned to have a morning plate at the old house cafe "cafe cocon" I visited last time, but unfortunately, it’s closed. So I had to go where I went yesterday, BUSH de coffee, and have Margherita again. Today’s recommended pasta is tomato pasta with Kenken bonito and grated daikon. You wouldn't think daikon and tomato would go together, right? It was surprisingly delicious! I want to try making it at home. The ocean view is endlessly captivating. They let me stay leisurely for a while.
◎ On the Way Back
Returning to Roadside Station Susami for a moment. The custard crepes sold by a food truck are incredibly rich and delicious, with a chewy dough. Dessert is a separate stomach, right?
Once again, blessed with good weather, I leisurely drive along the coast to Shirahama. I stop at every roadside station I can find. Although I couldn’t find the foot-bath spot, I descended to the water’s edge and thoroughly enjoyed the Pacific.
◎ 16:00 Tore Tore Market
Since we’re here, I definitely want to stop by. I’ve already had delicious seafood, so I wander around the store and buy plums for souvenirs. It’s a bit sad that since COVID, we can’t sample different things anymore.
I enjoy lingering in the afterglow of the journey while stopping at roadside stations and service areas.
◎ 20:00 Return Home
I’ll work hard on my diet starting tomorrow.
◎ Summary
While savoring delicious seafood, I was able to touch the beauty of nature and the warmth of the locals, making this another wonderful trip that will remain a lifelong memory. While Shirahama may represent Wakayama, I hope you’ll stretch your legs to Susami if you go that far. It’s so comfortable that it makes you want to consider moving there. I wholeheartedly recommend this travel route.
May you, who read until the end, be blessed with a happy journey.
