Experience of the stay
Experiences during the trip
Thanks to ANA's Winter Travel Discount Mileage Campaign, the flight from Fukuoka to Nagoya was only 7,900 miles. So, I planned a 2-night, 3-day trip (from December 15 to 17) to Aichi (Nagoya) and Gifu as a part of my university memories.
(First Day)
My travel memories began in Fukuoka. I mistakenly thought the flight departure time was 20 minutes later, which led to a mad rush, using a taxi on the expressway (goodbye, my 4,430 yen). Somehow, I made it just in time, but I learned that I need to check the time properly the day before (cry).
After arriving at Chubu Centrair International Airport a little after 8:30, I moved to Nagoya Station. There, I had ramen at Nagoya Station Noodle Street and also tried Hinode Ramen.
After filling my stomach, I headed to the Nagoya City Science Museum. There's also a science museum in Fukuoka, but let’s overlook that. It was much more enjoyable than I had imagined, and it allowed me to return to my childhood. There was so much I didn’t know, and I learned a lot.
After visiting, I returned to the hotel and went to the blood donation room at Nagoya Station to give (component) blood. I might receive comments like, "But they have that in Fukuoka, too!" but who knows when I can do it back in Fukuoka, and I really wanted to try blood donation at a different place. Surprisingly, while Fukuoka has televisions set up, the blood donation beds in Nagoya had iPads instead, which made me realize that there are differences by region. {As a side note, I also donated blood in Kumamoto (in front of COCOSA) after the new year. There were a lot of manga (including all volumes of Conan and One Piece) available, and I had to take off my shoes when sitting on the donation bed, which wasn’t the case in either Nagoya or Fukuoka.}
After that, I searched for a dinner place that didn’t have a queue, had tsukemen, returned to the hotel, and slept soundly.
(Second Day)
On the second day, I headed to Kinshachi Yokocho first. On the way, I saw a statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and recalling his association with the construction of Nagoya Castle, I, being from Kumamoto, couldn’t help but make a detour. There I found the Nagoya Noh Theatre, which was open, and I decided to go in. In conclusion, it was really interesting. I had only learned about Noh in middle school social studies, but the relationship with Kyogen, the history of Noh, and the fact that Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu were deeply enamored with Noh was incredibly fascinating. Since I was the only visitor, I got to see the main stage, and the security guard there was very knowledgeable and told me various things about the structure of the main stage, its features, and the fact that the hinoki wood used in the columns costs about 10 million yen each.
After that, I went to Kinshachi Yokocho, had tsukemen there, and headed to Nagoya Castle. The gold leaf and refined design of the tatami room at Nagoya Castle, as well as the design of the folding screens, were all beautiful, and I was captivated. Afterward, I entered a tea house on the premises and enjoyed tea sweets and matcha. It felt very nostalgic since I hadn’t had tea since elementary school.
In that flow, I tried to head to the Tokugawa Art Museum, but I took the wrong bus and ended up at Chubu Tower. There wasn’t particularly anywhere I wanted to visit, so I decided to go to Gifu, which was about 40 minutes away.
I went to Gifu Castle, but I arrived just as it was closing and couldn’t enter. I only bought some Hida beef sauce at the souvenir shop and strolled around Gifu Park (which was very beautiful) before returning to Nagoya Station.
After a series of twists and turns for dinner, I ended up at Yamamoto-ya for miso-nikomi udon. In conclusion, it wasn’t that delicious for the price (just my opinion). I returned to the hotel after that and slept soundly.
(Third Day)
First, I went to Ajisen. It was unbelievably spicy, and I cried.
Afterward, I bought souvenirs for my friends and went back to the Tokugawa Art Museum for a revenge visit. It was closed. Apparently, it’s closed for the New Year starting from the 16th (cry). However, I stopped by Tokugawa Garden next door, which was the pinnacle of beauty. I think it’s optimal for digital detox or to ponder things. I also experienced feeding koi fish, and they were incredibly hungry.
Lastly, I went to the airport, had ramen there (which was the most delicious in Nagoya), and then returned to Fukuoka.
I was able to have various experiences. I got to taste the extraordinary and spent a very meaningful and enjoyable time! There are still places I want to visit, so I want to go back.
