Experience of the stay
I stayed for two nights in early June 2025 with my two children.
The access from the station was excellent, and we were within walking distance of tourist spots like the morning market and Mashu-maru, the red brick warehouses, and Hachiman-zaka, which made for a nice walk given the good weather. For slightly farther locations like Goryokaku and the Hakodate Mountain Ropeway, we used the free bus exclusive to hotel guests, making our sightseeing very comfortable.
The hot springs were wonderful! The temperature was a bit high for the kids, but the naturally flowing salty spring water made all the fatigue from the trip melt away, and we enjoyed it many times during our stay.
The OMO Base, which is also a selling point of OMO, was bright and spacious with large windows. After the bath, we cooled off and enjoyed Fuji Ice, a treat I was eager to try but didn’t get to buy, so I was thrilled to find it!
Overall, it felt like they catered to every little need.
The only thing I found concerning was the narrow entrance to the room; every time the door opened, my shoes would get caught. Even so, I definitely want to stay at this hotel again.
Experiences during the trip
This mother-child trip to Hakodate had different purposes for each of us. My 11-year-old daughter wanted to visit Goryokaku, the setting for the Detective Conan movie, my 6-year-old son, a train enthusiast, wanted to take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Honshu to Hakodate, and I wanted to stay at OMO Hakodate.
We were able to fulfill all our wishes by staying at OMO Hakodate. After arriving at Hakodate Station in the afternoon and dropping off our luggage at the hotel, we headed to 'Kaitenzushi Nemuro Hanamaru' at 'Kiraris Hakodate', just a 3-minute walk away. Since we arrived around 1:30 pm, we were able to enter without waiting. By the time we left, there was a line. Was it a snack?
After filling our stomachs, we took the hotel's bus to Goryokaku. We strolled around the tower and the park, and purchased butter ice cream at Rokkatei. On the way back to the hotel, we decided to ride the local bus!
We checked in, enjoyed the hot springs, and then went to a popular ramen shop called 'Shinano', which was also about a 3-minute walk away, to have Hakodate ramen. We managed to get the last seat without waiting!
The next morning, we took a leisurely walk to see the Mashu-maru. The kids played endlessly in the square. We then wandered towards the red brick warehouse and had an early lunch at Lucky Pierrot, a place we wanted to visit. We entered around 10:30 am, and though the seats were empty, by the time we left, there was a long line. We were lucky.
We pushed ourselves up the Hachiman-zaka to enjoy a spectacular view, then returned to the hotel for a large public bath and a nap. It was nice to relax in the room during a longer stay.
In the evening, we took the hotel bus to the must-visit Hakodate Mountain Ropeway. The number of tourists was overwhelming!
I didn’t want to stay out too late, so we didn’t wait until it got dark, but it was nice to see the lights starting to come on from the returning ropeway. Although the night view is famous, the sunset is also spectacular.
