Experience of the stay
I took a trip to Gujo using my holiday at the beginning of the year. As the Little Kyoto of Oku-Mino, I had always wanted to visit after seeing it on social media, so this was a long-awaited visit. The accommodation I chose during my stay was this one.
I knew that Fairfield is a Marriott hotel near a road station, but this was my first time staying there. While it’s reasonably priced, I wondered how it would compare to other cheaper accommodations if you're considering staying without meals. However, being part of the Marriott chain, it did not disappoint. The room was clean, and while simple, it also felt high quality. I stayed alone, but I enjoyed the luxury of a king-sized bed, haha.
The shower room is simply designed without a bath, but there are hot spring facilities nearby that you can buy tickets for at a discount at the front desk, so I recommend it for those who want to relax in a bath.
I focused on sightseeing and explored the area around Gujo Hachiman, which is two stations away, but I was satisfied, thinking that it’s also a nice hotel for relaxing during your stay. I would love to stay here again when I come to Gujo, and if they ever hold the Fairfield tour event again, I would definitely want to participate.
Experiences during the trip
I visited Gujo City, known as the Little Kyoto of Oku-Mino, for the first time.
A short walk from Gujo Hachiman Station in the city center reveals Gujo Hachiman Castle, a symbol of the town, perched on a hill. Although it looks quite far away, it's surprisingly only about a 20-minute walk from the urban area. The uphill walk is challenging, but if you have the time, it's worth a visit.
Additionally, there are several photo spots throughout the town where water flows. You can find places like Yanaka Mizunokomichi, Sogi Water, the water basin, and Yoshida River flowing through the center of the town. Of course, the old streets unique to Little Kyoto also provide an endless source of inspiration for photography enthusiasts.
I barely had enough time to capture everything, haha.
Regarding food, I enjoyed eel at "Uo Tora" this time. The white grilled eel with four different flavors was perfect for my greedy self, haha. It seems Gujo is famous for ayu (sweetfish), and they serve it here too, so I definitely want to come back and try it in the summer.
Gujo City has two faces: the old streets of Little Kyoto and a water town. It was a place where I could feel the history of people who have lived along with water. It’s a fun town that makes you want to visit again and again.
