-GM Interview-Just Sleep Osaka Shinsaibashi brings Taiwan x Osaka’s warm hospitality and local charm

We interviewed the GMs (general managers) of such hotels and delved deeply into the charms of these hotels that are suitable for the purpose of travel.

This time, we interviewed Toby, GM of Just Sleep Osaka Shinsaibashi, a hotel brand from Taiwan that opened in March 2023 and will be the first hotel to land in Japan, about the appeal of Just Sleep, which is still unknown in Japan.

-What is the “Just Sleep” hotel brand from Taiwan?

Just Sleep combines the convenience and cost performance of an economy hotel with the design features of a lifestyle hotel.

Just Sleep is operated by Silks Hotel Group, a Taiwanese hotel management company.

The company also operates six other hotel brands, including Regent Taipei, Silks Place, and Wellspring by Silks.

It also operates the Regent Galleria, a luxury brand shopping mall, and Silks Palace and other restaurants adjacent to the National Palace Museum, a popular tourist attraction in Taiwan.

In Taiwan, we operate hotels in 9 major tourist areas, and in March 2023, we opened Just Sleep Osaka Shinsaibashi, our first overseas expansion, bringing our total number of hotels to 10.

-Just Sleep Osaka Shinsaibashi is our first overseas branch. What is the unique charm of the first store in Japan?

Just Sleep offers services in collaboration with local communities and designs that make the most of the characteristics of each region.

At Just Sleep Osaka-Shinsaibashi, our first overseas branch, you can experience the charms of both Osaka and Taiwan.

First of all, the illustration at the entrance welcomes you with pop art inspired by Osaka America Mura.

The guest rooms are also decorated with original illustrations inspired by Osaka Castle and Danjiri (floats).

Located behind the front desk on the first floor, Just Café is a multifaceted restaurant that combines Osaka’s local cuisine with a distinctive Taiwanese menu.

From Osaka, we offer Kansai-style dashimaki tamago and Kansai-style udon. The dashimaki tamago can be made into a dashimaki tamago sandwich, which originated in Osaka, and the udon can be made into a “curry udon” with curry, which is available on the menu.

The authentic Taiwanese cuisine has also been very well received by our Taiwanese guests, who have commented, “I was in Japan for five days, but this is the best breakfast I’ve ever had! I’ve been in Japan for 5 days and this is the best breakfast I’ve ever had!

-There were some Taiwanese dishes that I had never seen before, such as Taiwanese meatballs (lau sung), which are not what Japanese people imagine Taiwanese food to be like, such as dim sum and lu lau rice, but I enjoyed them after the staff told me that they were delicious when eaten in porridge.

That was good. We anyway place importance on actively communicating with our customers. We want to talk to them before they ask, understand their demands, and deliver services that satisfy them.

Just Café also offers local Kansai coffee, tea, and snacks as welcome drinks from 1 pm.

We are sure you will discover something like, “Oh, this is a snack from an Osaka company!” You will discover something like that.

In addition to what is offered here, the hotel incorporates items from Osaka throughout the hotel, including amenities in guest rooms and souvenir sweets made by Osaka-based companies.

In addition, we work with companies to help make travel more enjoyable. We are also planning to hold events related to our hometown Osaka on a regular basis.

What is the GM’s recommendation on how to enjoy Just Sleep in Taiwan?

I worked at Just Sleep in Taiwan for 5 years, and since Just Sleep in Taiwan also has many attractive hotels with their own regional characteristics, it is difficult to decide which one to recommend, so I will introduce some recommendations according to the purpose of your trip.

If you want to experience Taiwan’s new sensibility and historical culture, “Just Sleep Taipei Ximending” is recommended.

It is only a 1-minute walk to Ximending Station and is adjacent to the bustling and vibrant Ximending shopping area.

Nearby, there are also historic and storybook attractions where visitors can experience new trends in Taiwanese style and historical culture, as well as taste authentic Taiwanese cuisine.

The nearby Long-Shan Temple is also a famous power spot for love in Taiwan.

Just Sleep Taipei Ximending is also Just Sleep’s first location, but has been renovated and reborn as Just Sleep 2.0.

Inside the building, guests can enjoy the playful spirit of the old Just Sleep, which retains its “soul” in the photogenic areas and stylish rooms.

Next, if you are looking for a hot spring bath, Just Sleep Yilan Jiaoxi is the place for you. The Jiaoxi Hot Springs are famous for their beauty, and there is an outdoor bath where you can wear a bathing suit and a large bath where you do not need to wear a bathing suit, and all guest rooms have large stone bathtubs where you can enjoy the hot springs all day long.

This hotel is recommended for family stays. There is a room for “old games,” which have been handed down in Taiwan for centuries, and a picture book library for children to enjoy.

Yilan County is only a little over an hour’s drive from Taipei, and its scenic beauty has long been considered one of the “Eight Sights of Lanyang.

For a change of pace, we recommend taking a day trip to the hot springs for a short drive or staying only one night in Yilan Jiaoxi.

While making the most of each region, all hotels are particular about their “beds” so that you can have a comfortable sleep, as the hotel name suggests.

The beds used in the hotels are the same mattresses used in the affiliated five-star Hotel Regent Taipei. Just Sleep Osaka Shinsaibashi also ordered from Taiwan a Taiwanese brand that is not available in Japan.

You can also change the pillows according to your preference.

Regent’s DNA that has been passed down from generation to generation

-I was impressed by the staff who were very kind and courteous to me when I stayed there myself.

That was good. Our hotel group started with the five-star Hotel Regent Taipei. All of our hotels have inherited Regent’s DNA, and we put a lot of effort into staff training and so on.

All on-site staff have the budget and authority to celebrate, and if it is a special day for a guest during their stay, such as a birthday, they have a system that allows them to deliver a “Just Wow!” surprise to the guest at their own discretion, such as decorating the room or preparing drinks, etc.

By eliminating the time it takes to get approval, we aim to provide speedy and warm service to our customers.

We want to provide performance above cost so that our customers can enjoy their trip to the fullest by spending their money on sightseeing, dining, and other activities.

Thanks to this, we have received a high rating of 4.9 out of 5 on Google reviews, and we believe that our customers feel that the experience they received was more than they paid for.

-What are Just Sleep’s plans for the future?

We plan to continue to focus on Japan. We plan to expand to Osaka and the Tokyo metropolitan area, so please look forward to it!
